O’Tama Kiyohara (1861-1939) - La passeggiata

The work comes from Palermo, part of a private collection by O'TAMA KIYOHARA Eleonora Ragusa (Tokyo 1861 - 1939). O’Tama was a young artist when she left Japan to bring Eastern art to Sicily. In Palermo, she led an intense life and, alongside Vincenzo Ragusa, founded the school-museum project. She is also known by the names Otama Kiyohara, Eleonora Ragusa, and Otama Ragusa. She was the first Japanese woman to paint in the European style and to pose for a European artist, Vincenzo Ragusa, a Palermo sculptor who would later become her husband.
After discovering the overwhelming beauty of Palermo, Otama will return to her homeland after half a century.
