The obverse depicts a Portuguese caravel with sails unfurled, sailing on the waves, a symbol of the country's maritime past, surrounded by the legend “REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA” and the year at the bottom. The reverse features the face value “10 Esc.” flanking an armillary sphere surmounted by the Portuguese national coat of arms, a classic emblem of Portuguese numismatic iconography.
