Description from the seller
Sansui Electric Co., Ltd. was founded in 1947 as a manufacturer of transformers, but by the 1960s it had established itself as a major audio component manufacturer. Despite its immense popularity (especially in the United States) in the 1960s and 1970s, after 1985 the company began to generate significantly lower profits than its rivals (Sony, Pioneer, and Technics). This was the end of the high-end audio boom, which was attributed to the growth in personal computer sales. Sansui Electric Co., Ltd. then focused on the production of high-end components in Japan and also began producing high-end television sets and other video equipment, while ceasing exports. By the late 1990s, the brand name was being used on video equipment manufactured by other companies.
Ultimately, Sansui Electric Co., Ltd., as part of Grande Holdings, went bankrupt in 2014. It is worth emphasizing that Sansui was the first company to use transformers in audio equipment, and also introduced a high-voltage tube-transistor (hybrid) amplifier and the QS/RM (Quadrasonic System/Regular Matrix) system, which allowed for obtaining four-channel sound from two-channel.
Since the 1960s, Sansui products have been renowned worldwide for their exceptional sound engineering, exquisite design, and superior performance. This was possible primarily because each model was crafted from start to finish by Sansui experts. Only the finest components were used in production to ensure consistent, superior quality, and each device was repeatedly tested with the most precise measurement instruments before being delivered to the customer. Thanks to this approach, Sansui receivers were characterized by low distortion parameters, higher damping factors, greater dynamics, and, above all, significantly improved sensitivity and selectivity.
The QRX 5500 is a quadraphonic receiver from the early 1970s, whose design was based on Sansui's "uncompromising quality." In the original catalog, the company recommended this model as "a device for the discerning connoisseur, offering extraordinary versatility thanks to the ability to connect two pairs of speakers, three tape recorders, and two turntables."
It's worth noting that this 4-channel receiver featured the newly developed QS Vario-Matrix, a high-quality OCL amplifier, and the renowned QS synthesizer. These revolutionary solutions ensure that the QRX 5500 model continues to deliver excellent performance, reliability, and exceptional audio fidelity to this day.
This model features a new, enlarged American walnut wood enclosure, which highlights its beautiful, 1970s-era design. The wood is finished with Chinese oil, made from natural oils. The potentiometers are in perfect condition. The unit has been fully inspected and serviced.
