Obsidian is a volcanic glass formed by the rapid cooling of lava, which is always rich in silicate ions. Obsidian is a natural glass, very similar to man-made glass.
A highly sought-after raw material in antiquity for making sharp tools (primarily knives) was one of the commodities that fueled Mediterranean trade and supported the economic life of extraction sites. Today, it is still worked into small decorative objects, jewelry, and blades for scalpels.
