Japanese Imperial Commemorative Pocket Watch – L’amie Quartz – Cloisonné Phoenix – 1986
Description
Japanese Imperial Commemorative Pocket Watch – L’amie Quartz – Showa 61 (1986)
This elegant pocket watch features a L’amie quartz movement housed in a gold-tone hunter case with a richly decorated cloisonné enamel front.
The lid shows a detailed phoenix and wave motif surrounding the chrysanthemum crest, an important emblem in Japan, rendered in soft tones of gold, blue and white.
Inside the lid, the Japanese engraving reads:
• “天皇陛下御在位六十年記念” – “Commemorating the 60th year of His Majesty the Emperor’s reign”
• “昭和六十一年” – “Showa 61”
Showa 61 corresponds to 1986, so this watch was produced as a 1986 imperial commemorative piece. These watches were typically given as presentation gifts and are rarely seen on the European market.
The white dial is signed “L’amie” and “Quartz”, with classic black Roman numerals and blued hands, creating a refined contrast to the richly coloured lid.
The watch comes with a braided white cord fob with gold-tone fittings and an oval medallion repeating the chrysanthemum motif, giving the set a complete and decorative appearance.

Collectability and story
This pocket watch is more than a timekeeper; it is a commemorative object from 1986 marking the 60th year of the Emperor’s reign, clearly stated in Japanese inside the lid.
The combination of:
• imperial chrysanthemum crest,
• hand-worked cloisonné enamel phoenix,
• and a complete set with matching braided fob and medallion
makes it a desirable piece for collectors of Japanese imperial memorabilia, cloisonné art, and unusual vintage pocket watches.
Such commemorative watches were not widely exported, so finding one in working order with its original decorative fob is uncommon in Europe.
