History/Documentation
Rare indeed: this Checker Aerobus, of which only 3,341 units were built. It is unknown how many are still in operation, but it is certain that this is a very special appearance. Certainly, a restored example like this one in Europe. The Aerobus was developed to serve as a shuttle bus at airports, and therefore has no less than 9 doors, 12 seats, and ample luggage space. This particular example is an early-built model and was exported from the United States to Munich, Germany, in 2004. It has been thoroughly restored here, ensuring it is in good condition. Since 2023, the vehicle has been registered in the Netherlands. The car comes with import documents, old advertisements, and vintage photos from both its time in Germany and the United States.
Exterior
No expense was spared to restore this Checker. The bodywork has been sandblasted and repainted in a beautiful white lacquer. Subtle striping has been applied to the sides. The chrome work has mostly been renewed and is in normal condition with signs of use. The rubbers have also been replaced, as have the wheels. At the time, the car, measuring 6.70 meters in length, was listed as the longest production car ever in the Guinness Book of Records.
INTERIOR:
The interior has also been upgraded, with the seats reupholstered in dark blue leather instead of synthetic leather. Four seats can accommodate three people each, totaling 12 passengers. Quite unique for its time is the air conditioning system. The car also features three electrically operated sunroofs.
Technical
The 5.1-liter V8 engine from Dodge delivers approximately 200 hp and achieves a top speed of 135 km/h, which is respectable for a curb weight of 2,400 kg. The main brake cylinders, wheel brake cylinders, and brake pads have been renewed. The brake hoses and lines, clutch, power steering, and power steering support have been replaced. The Checker is in good, solid condition underneath and under the hood. The car has a manual 3-speed gearbox (column shift), and it drives, shifts, and brakes well.
General
The 'Checker Motors Company' was founded in 1921 and built cars until 1982. The Aerobus was unique in size at the time and was available as a 9-passenger or 12-passenger sedan or station wagon. The model was developed as a shuttle bus at the airport but was also used for other purposes, such as an ambulance, prisoner transport, taxi, or marketing vehicle at Disney World. Today, an Aerobus is very rare, especially in good condition. It is an ideal marketing vehicle for, for example, hotel or event transportation.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
