Description from the seller
CONSTELLATION (signed) Michael KENNA
Size 30.5x26.5cm
Like new
A selection of 122 sublime photographs from the work of Michael Kenna, on the occasion of his fifty-year artistic career anniversary.
Michael Kenna has published a considerable body of work since the 1980s. In his numerous monographs, one can see a genuine perspective developing in the tireless quest for an imagined landscape. In his photography, Kenna approaches drawing: he offers a mental vision, a reimagining of a world, certainly more dreamt than described, but one that exists through confrontation with the elements, with nature.
Michael Kenna's mysterious photographs, often taken at dawn or during the dark hours of the night, mainly focus on the interaction between the natural landscape and human-made structures. Kenna photographs with a remarkable mastery of light and time.
Light is obviously a decisive factor: depending on the quality of the atmosphere (clouds, fog, sun, snow...), the time of the shot (dawn, night, day), it is also skillfully worked on in the laboratory.
Time: many of his photographs are taken with long pauses, giving them this very particular appearance of frozen, condensed time.
Kenna is particularly known for the touching intimacy of his traditional film photographs, not digital. His printing techniques are very personal and meticulous, carried out by hand in his own darkroom.
Kenna's photographs have been exhibited in over four hundred and fifty solo exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world, and are included in more than one hundred permanent institutional collections.
