Original Sentani “Maro” Tapa Cloth with Spirit Figures – Babronko Village, Lake Sentani (Field Collected 1987)
A rare and authentic Sentani “Maro” tapa cloth from Babronko village, collected in the field in 1987. This exceptional piece represents one of the most distinctive artistic traditions of the Lake Sentani region in West Papua.
Made from beaten inner bark and painted with natural pigments, this Maro cloth displays classic Sentani spirit figures—stylised human and ancestral beings rendered in fluid, confident lines. The composition is bold yet harmonious, carrying the unmistakable aesthetic of traditional Sentani art. The pigments have matured into a warm, matte patina, underscoring its age and authenticity.
Maro cloths were traditionally created by women and played an important role in rituals, dances and clan ceremonies. The painted figures are not merely decorative; they are embodiments of clan ancestors, protective spirits and mythological beings, each linked to the spiritual geography of the Sentani communities. Authentic village-made examples from the 1980s—with verifiable field provenance—have become increasingly scarce.
This cloth has been preserved in excellent condition: no restorations, only light edge wear consistent with age, and a rich, original surface. It is highly suitable for framing or display as a striking textile artwork.
