Exceptional antique statuette from the Dogon tribe, Mali – bronze woman with pestle
We present a unique bronze statuette from the West African state of Mali, created using the traditional lost wax technique (cire perdue). This small artistic sculpture from the Dogon tribe depicts a woman working with a hollow pestle and mortar – a motif that had a magical and sacrificial role in the original society.
The total height of the statuette including the pestle is 20.5 cm, the width of the base is 5 cm and the depth is 3 cm, and the weight is 290 g. A fine patina confirms its age and authenticity – the bronze has acquired a warm glow and small oxidized spots. Considering the context of the find, the cutting modeling and the aesthetics of the details, this is an original from the mid-20th century.
Made approximately 1940–1970. The Dogon themselves did not historically make bronzes – this technique came to them through neighboring tribes and gradually spread among them, especially for the needs of the collector's market during the colonial period and shortly after. Fine, deep oxides in the patina and slight corrosion structures indicate that the statuette had been lying around for several decades – the typical age of these ethnographic objects is therefore estimated at 60–80 years.
The Dogon, known for their rich cosmogonic myths, depicted everyday and ritual scenes in bronze and wood. The statuette of a woman with a pestle in her hand served not only as a symbol of thanksgiving for the harvest, but also as a cult sacrificial relic on the family altar.
Technique: lost wax – each statuette is a unique original
Surface: rusty-brown patina with hints of green bases (natural oxidation)
The ornamental belt around the neck and engraved stripes on the torso and legs emphasize the art of the Dogon tribe.
Add to your collection an exceptional Dogon figurine that will liven up any gallery or cozy interior full of artistic artifacts.
