Ancient religious wooden statue, carved and polychrome – Saint Joseph – Spanish work, Catalonia, 19th century – An exceptionally fine piece.
Magnificent antique religious statue representing Saint Joseph, crafted in carved wood, fully polychromed and decorated with gold leaf according to the traditional estofado technique.
Piece of remarkable artistic quality, originating from a religious imagery workshop in Catalonia (Spain), second half of the 19th century.
The sculpture is distinguished by the extraordinary finesse of the facial features, the very soft modeling of the volumes, and a deeply spiritual expression typical of the Catalan school. The eyes, painted by hand, the curls of the hair, and the beard are executed with exceptional realism.
The richly worked drapery features deep vertical folds and very precise gold decorations: sacred monograms, stylized floral motifs, and symbols associated with Saint Joseph. The original gold leaf shows natural ancient craquelure, an obvious sign of authenticity and age.
The statue features a carved relief lily, a traditional symbol of Saint Joseph, executed with particular care. The details of the hands, feet, and clothing demonstrate a high level of artisanal craftsmanship, typical of Catalan workshops of the period.
The piece today rests on a more recent (20th century) wooden plinth, simple and stable, which nicely complements the sculpture.
