Kirdi is a name resulting from the local deformation of the name 'kurdos,' which pejoratively designates the 'pagans' in opposition to the followers of
Islam. In the mountains of Cameroon, from the Garoua region to Mora, there is a wide variety of non-Muslim ethnic groups that have been converting to Islam or missionary Catholicism over the past 60 years. The majority ethnic group, the Mafa, practice a form of monotheism tinged with animism, with a single creator god cohabiting with spirits.
