Description from the seller
Description
Among the areas illuminated are: the lives of all members of this illustrious family; the alleged invention of oil painting by Jan; and the brothers' collaboration on the masterpiece The Altarpiece of the Mystic Lamb. Special attention is given to Jan, the better-known of the two; an extensive listing and analysis of his paintings are provided.
Brief Summary
Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441) was a painter from the County of Loon, which from 1366 fell under the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. He is considered, alongside Rogier van der Weyden, one of the leading representatives of the Flemish Primitives. His most famous work includes the panel altarpiece The Lamb of God (1432), which can be viewed in the Saint Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent. Hubert was his brother. This book attempts to distinguish the personalities of Hubert and Jan and thus humanize the mystification surrounding their persons and works.
This book is written by Elisabeth Dhanens (1915–2014), a Belgian art historian specializing in the art of the Flemish Primitives, particularly in the works of the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck.
The bound book in green half-linen with gold embossing and dust jacket is housed in a slipcase. The book contains 400 pages with many reproductions in color and black-and-white at scale, some of which are fold-out. It is a publication by Mercatorfonds, Antwerp 1980.
