Nobuyoshi Araki - 1997 Shikijyo Sexual Desire Nobuyoshi Araki - 1997

Shikijyo Sexual Desire is a collection of works by Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's most representative postwar photographers. Rather than saying, “Photography is a medium,” it is more accurate to say, “Araki is a medium.” The magazine that embodied this philosophy was Shashin Jidai (Photography Era). In the 1980s, renowned editor Akio Suei conceived the idea of creating a magazine centred around Araki, whose very existence functioned as a form of media. The magazine aimed to capture photographs that could not be contained within conventional photographic theory or featured in standard camera publications, collaborating with Araki and others on the theme of eroticism. Each issue sold hundreds of thousands of copies, and Shashin Jidai has since become a legendary photography magazine. Through this collaboration with Suei, Araki transcended the boundaries of photography, establishing himself as a prominent artist throughout the 1980s. While his work remains as vibrant and prolific as ever today, this large-format collection, published by an overseas publisher in the 1990s, features Araki's signature photo series—including portraits, nudes, still lifes, and landscapes. Shipping Method We ship via Japan Post, DHL, or FedEx. International Buyers: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping costs.
