Katanga Air Force - 1962 is a cotton textile measuring 64 by 95 cm and in good condition.
Description from the seller
Katanga separated from Congo between 1960 and 1963, shortly after its independence from Belgium.
Katanga was the wealthiest province economically in Congo, with enormous copper and uranium deposits.
However, the new state could not sustain itself on its own. Therefore, Katanga hired hundreds of mercenaries, mainly from Europe (Belgium, France, Great Britain, but also Germany and South Africa). They served as officers, pilots, and instructors for the Katangese army and air force. These foreign combatants played a significant role in the fighting against both the Congolese government army and United Nations (UN) troops.
The presence of mercenaries temporarily provided Katanga with military strength but also drew significant international criticism. Ultimately, UN troops succeeded in ending the secession in 1963 and restoring Katanga under Congolese control.
