Rare medieval ball (pad)lock from the Netherlands, iron, 14th–15th century, dimensions 49 x 33 x 29 mm, in reasonable condition.
Description from the seller
This object is a medieval or post-medieval ball lock, typically made of iron. This type of lock was used in Europe for centuries, from the Viking Age to the 19th century.
Main Features
Dimensions: 49 x 33 x 29 mm
Condition: The lock has suffered corrosion over the years due to prolonged exposure to natural elements, resulting in small parts of the surface being lost.
Shape: The lock has a distinctive spherical or round casing and a curved shackle.
Materials: They were usually made of forged or cast iron, which ensured robustness and durability.
Mechanism: The internal mechanism often consisted of simple spring locks. A special key was inserted into an opening (such as the hole on the side of this example) to press the springs together and unlock the latch.
Because of their portability, they were used to secure a variety of possessions, such as chests, doors, and later even mailbags in the Wild West.
Origin: Variants of this type of slot have been found throughout Europe, especially in Scandinavian and German collections.
Shipping method: this lot will be excellently packaged and shipped via DHL through Catawiki's smart shipping.
