Description from the seller
Grand-Tour Amphora – Attic red-figure amphora, 19th century
Exceptional high-quality Grand Tour amphora from the 19th century, crafted after an Attic red-figure amphora from the 5th–4th centuries BC. The piece belongs to the highest category of historical replicas: proportions, line work, and surface effect are very convincing.
The red-figured depiction shows a dynamic mythological scene with a winged figure, hunters, and animals. The finely detailed line work, the deep black slip, and the balanced classical form language correspond to ancient models with extraordinary precision.
The amphora has a very beautiful patina with natural wear and a harmonious surface structure. Such pieces were produced in Italian art centers like Rome, Naples, or Florence in the 19th century as study objects for archaeologists, museums, and educated travelers of the Grand Tour.
Provenance:
Disposal of the collection of Dr. D. Müller, from the art collection of his father, Mr. W. Müller.
Mr. Müller promoted Roman excavations at Schwarzenacker near Homburg/Saar in the 1960s and later headed the cultural office of the city of Homburg. There, he oversaw the expansion and reconstruction of the Schwarzenacker Roman Museum and was involved in various archaeological projects.
His last official measure was the excavation and fortification of the Merburg ruins (11th century, with suspected Roman origins). During these works, among other things, a Byzantine silver scale from the 15th century was discovered, which Mr. Müller described in a publication.
Details:
• Dimensions: approximately 30.5 × 15 × 15 cm
Condition: very good for its age; light bumps and authentic patina.
Quality: exceptionally fine academic replica – top Grand Tour category.
