Description from the seller
Circa early 20th century - Selection of Handcrafted Wooden Clogs and Cellar Rat - Mixed Sizes
An authentic collection of handcrafted wooden clogs and a traditional "rat de cave" (cellar rat), representing rural European craftsmanship from the early 20th century. This vintage ensemble offers a glimpse into the shoemaking practices and folk art of the time.
Included in the lot are three distinct pairs of wooden clogs, each showcasing unique designs and patinas developed over time. The largest pair measures approximately 32.5 cm (12.8 in) in length, 11 cm (4.3 in) in width, and 11 cm (4.3 in) in height. The shoes vary in shape and style, including a rare pair with leather overlays and embossed detailing, as well as a sculpted boot-like piece featuring real fabric laces.
The collection also features a small carved wooden shoe, most likely a "rat de cave"—a decorative or utilitarian item traditionally used in wine cellars, possibly as a match holder or candle stand. The initials "S.M" are carved into one of the pieces, suggesting a personal or maker's mark, adding character and historical depth to the lot.
Originating from France, this lot reflects the artistry and utility of vernacular footwear and cellar traditions, making it an appealing acquisition for collectors of folk art or ethnographic objects. All items show signs of wear consistent with age and use, contributing to their authentic charm. Sold as is.
A unique opportunity to own a piece of shoemaking and wine cellar heritage.
