This original African Punu mask from Gabon is an iconic tribal art object, made by the Punu people, known for their idealized, serene feminine face, often painted white with carved hairstyles and a characteristic high forehead and full lips. These masks represent female ancestors and are used in the important Okuyi dances (also called Mwiri) of the Punu and Lumbu groups in southern Gabon.
The mask is made of carved wood in one piece, with traces of traditional white plaster.
These masks are highly sought after by collectors of African art for their aesthetic appeal and cultural significance, and represent an important aspect of Punu heritage and spiritual life.
