Description from the seller

This is a Russian Orthodox icon depicting two saints: a holy nun and a young saint at her feet. At the top, the Virgin Mary appears in a cloud, blessing the scene from heaven.

Identification of the registration
The text in ancient Cyrillic indicates:

Icon of the Holy Martyrs Cyril and Maria
which translates as:

Icon of the holy martyrs Cyril and Mary

Therefore, the central figures are:

Santa María — a nun or martyr (dressed in a dark habit and a maroon cloak)

San Cirilo — the young at his feet, also a martyr.

Both are Russian martyrs venerated in the Orthodox tradition. They are not the well-known Cyril and Methodius (the evangelizers of the Slavs), but martyrs named Kirill (Cyril) and Maria, whose cult spread especially in the Russian sphere.

Iconographic details

Gold background indicates divine glory and holiness.

The saint protects the young man with her mantle, a symbol of intercession and spiritual bond.

The Virgin at the top reinforces the idea of celestial protection.

Technique: egg tempera on panel, with estofa and original gilding.

Typical 19th-century red wine borders.

Possible origin: workshops of the Golden Ring (Yaroslavl – Kostroma)
Zones where this type of icons was very common.
