Description from the seller
This is a Russian Orthodox icon representing Christ Pantocrator in Majesty, of a very characteristic type called:
Christ enthroned with the Deesis
Deisis = intercession
What exactly do we see?
Christ at the center
Seated on a royal throne, in an attitude of judgment and divine royalty.
He blesses with his right hand.
With the left hand, he holds an open book with evangelical text.
The title at the top is in ecclesiastical Slavic.
ГЬ ВСЕДЕРЖИТЕЛЬ IС ХС
The Almighty Lord, Jesus Christ
Immediate companions: The traditional Deesis.
On both sides of the throne.
On the left: the Virgin Mary, in a posture of supplication.
On the right: Saint John the Baptist, also interceding.
They pray for humanity before Christ the Judge.
Angels behind the throne
Three angels accompany and clarify the celestial dimension of the throne.
Lower part: stricken hierarchs
Below, at the feet of Christ, bishops and saints fallen to the ground in an attitude of submission and worship appear.
One is symbolically trampled.
This represents the submission of earthly powers to the Kingdom of Christ.
That detail appears in icons of:
The Final Judgment
The Throne of Wisdom
Christ the King Universal
Spiritual significance
This icon expresses:
Christ is the King of the Universe and the final Judge, and all human or celestial authority is subject to Him.
It is a firm and solemn theological message from the Orthodox Church.
