Roman fibula with incised line decoration on the bow (1st–4th centuries AD). Bronze. Length 10.8 cm. Roman fibulae were decorative brooches used to fasten garments, functioning much like modern safety pins. Crafted in bronze, silver, or gold, they came in many shapes and styles that varied across regions and periods. Beyond their practical purpose, fibulae often reflected personal identity, status, and artistic taste within Roman society. Provenance: Purchased by the current owner to an art dealer in 2024 (US).
