- telemeter camera with three reticles in the viewfinder (40-50-90, for target insertion);
Sight with 0.62x magnification, telemetric base of 18.9mm.
- Built-in TTL light meter via a movable arm, with a CdS cell and manual exposure with visible times at the top of the viewfinder.
- vertical sliding shutter
- Shutter speeds from 1/1000 to 1/2 sec, + B mode
- dimensions: 11.5 x 7.5 cm;
Film rewinding mechanism located on the case back.
- U-shaped back completely removable;
- PX635 battery placed on the internal case back.
- first serial number: 1,300,001, 65,000 units produced until 1976, or the most produced Leica M until then;
Engraving on the case back: manufactured in Japan for Leitz Wetzlar.
- Included optics: Summicron C 40/2, Elmarit 40/2.8 (very few units produced), ElmarC 90/4, all with a minimum focusing distance of 0.80m. The three lenses bear the label 'made in Germany'. There is also a rare version of the Summicron 40/2 Atrappe, which is only for display, immediately identifiable because it lacks a serial number.
Note that, although Leica stated that these lenses were only suitable for the CL, the above-mentioned optics are compatible with any M body.
On the CL, the Rokkor 28-40-90mm lenses from the Minolta CLE kit are also compatible.
