Description from the seller
Pair of bronze boat or sanctuary oil lamps – Very rare
Exceptional pair of portable oil lamps in solid bronze with Mediterranean patina, known as the 'hook suspension' model, used aboard ships or in chapels and sanctuaries.
Description and rare features
Double-use model: can be placed on a table or suspended using the articulated hook and the original chain.
Piriform reservoir on a moulded foot, elongated spout.
Riveted bronze suspension hook, typical of marine or church lamps
Height when placed: 17 cm
Total height in suspension: 30 cm
Maximum diameter of the tank: 7 cm.
Era: early 1900s
Probable origin: Mediterranean basin (Southern Italy, Sicily, Malta, or Provence / Languedoc for identical French models).
Usage:
On board merchant ships or warships (lighting of officer cabins or chapels on board)
In small chapels, hermitages, or processions (very common in southern Italy and Sicily).
Style: Neoclassical Louis XVI / Directoire with Southern Baroque influence, very sober and functional.
Remarkable state of conservation
Old patina intact, no deformation, no restoration, all moving elements (cover, chain, hook) original and functional. Slight stable oxidation marks that attest to authenticity.
Pieces that have become extremely rare, preserved, and with their complete hooks.
A choice acquisition for a collection of religious art, antique maritime objects, or for distinctive interior decoration (placed on a console or hung in a library).
Similar references for older models can be seen in the collections of the National Maritime Museum and several Sicilian museums.
