Ancient Greek, Corinthian Terracotta Large Kylix or Plemochoë

On a stemmed foot with wide base, beautifully decorated in brown and red slip with various animals: a ram, a panther, a wild boar, a stag and two swans, one with open wings. Rosette fillers and incised details. The inside decorated with concentric lines. Exquisite. The term plemochoë can be translated as “completely poured,” and it refers to a vessel shaped like a shallow bowl with a broad shoulder, a tall foot, and often a fitted lid. These containers are believed to have been used to hold perfumed liquids for everyday grooming, ritual practices, and burial contexts. Scholars do not unanimously agree on the correct terminology for this type of vessel. It is sometimes identified as an exaleiptron and, less accurately, as a kothon. In general usage, exaleiptron tends to describe versions without a stem—especially those produced in Corinth—while plemochoë is more commonly applied to the Athenian form, which typically stands on a high foot and frequently includes a lid. Size: 15.5 cm D - 6 1/16 inches Material: Terracotta Culture: Corinthian, c. 7th-6th Century B.C. Condition: Intact Provenance: Ex English private collection acquired in the 1960s-1980s.
