Description from the seller

Hand-knotted, pure wool rug from Ayvacik in Canakkale, northwest Turkey. The design and chosen symbols indicate Turkmen influences. Crosses in the three central medallions symbolize the family, the foundation of life. The two contrasting colors represent the yin yang symbol, the complementary male and female energies. The four squares immediately around the crosses stand for the four elements, the four seasons, and the four directions. The three central medallions are each surrounded by four triangles. This is the symbol of the dragon, a protective symbol that allows good to pass through and keeps evil out. The triangles within the dragons are amulets, serving to ward off the evil eye. On the outer edge, a fertility symbol is depicted between two flames. An ancient symbol originating from Zoroastrianism.
