Biography of Isidre Odena Daura (Tarrassa, 1910 - 2008).

Isidro Odena y Daura was born on the 4th of January 1910, in the San Pedro de Tarrassa neighbourhood, and he was baptized in its Romanesque church with the names of Isidro, Juan and José.

At the age of thirteen he registered in the School of Arts and Crafts under the direction of Tomás Viver.

A few years later, he alternated his studies in La Llotja in Barcelona with the workshop of scenographer Alarma, under the direction of master Cabanes.

In 1927, he rented a large studio in an attic that had previously been the studio of painter Joaquim Vancells. However, soon after he handed it over to a series of friends, all of them painters, and they formed the association Amigos de las artes.

At the age of 18, he exposed already his paintings in his home town, and also in Vic, Mataró, Figueres, Perpignan, etc.

In 1931, he obtained a pensions from Terrassa’s city hall in order to spend some time in Paris and Belgium, notably in Bruges, where he revelled in painting the idyllic canals of this city (the Venice of the north).
In Paris, he met -among others- Pablo Planas, Torres García, Julio González, Mompou, the poet Joseph Riviere, the lawyer Henry Torres, etc. 

After finishing his military service, he kept on painting. He also did engravings on wood and linoleum, and his most popular painting was the illustration of the legend of Sant Llorenç del munt dragon, about a poem by the poet Pons. This painting was signed with the name of Sidru.

He exhibited his works several times in Barcelona and other places in Catalonia. Also in Valencia, Zaragoza, Paris, Toulousse, Lyon and London, where he spent log periods.

He also dedicated himself to the genre of the small painting. This is very appreciated by foreign customers, in particular subjects such as ‘Mercado en la plaza de Vic’ which is distributed all over the world.

He also took part in a contest for the position of drawing teacher for applied works in the primary schools of the Generalitat. He obtained a position in his own city.

He exhibited his works in the society of Amigos de las artes in Terrassa, which was visited by the great Francesc Macià, who wrote the following in the book of honour:
"mi espíritu ha despegado al recibir la impresión que me han producido las obras artísticas del joven pintor Isidre Odena."
