PROVENANCE: Private Belgian Collection.

CONDITION: Mask, copper sheeting over wood, with raffia ‘hair’ and beard, white pigments. Incised teeth. Some wood chips missing.

AGE: Early to mid-XXth century

HEIGHT: 30 cm without the beard, with 55 cm LARGE: 20cm No stand included. Can easily be attached on a wall.

Living east of the Kasai River in Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), the Salampasu are a warrior people with no centralized form of government. Their masks and figure sculptures are made for use in initiation rites and ceremonies, and to frighten surrounding tribes .

The costume of the mask, is comprised of animal skins, fiber and feathers, to be sacralized the spirit is in the costume as well as the face covering.
The entity of mask/costume is called Akish; when it is worn – that is, possessed by the spirit, it is called Mukish, the mask is called IDANGANI.

CONDITION: the lower beard sphere is slightly damaged, and also some chips missing on the two protruding circles right and left of the eyes, one teeth damaged, otherwise the metal sheets and hair raffia is in very good condition. ( see pictures)
