AN AFIKPO IGBO MASK, NIGERIA

Composed of a succession of geometric forms, the cone face marked by a jagged medial rib projected in high relief and by the slit eyes stretching on its width. Triangular holes in the mask. It is surmounted by a high openwork palette of triangular, square and oval motives. Crusty patina, with highlights of red tokula, dark pigments, and white kaolin pigments.

According to Ottenberg (in Paudrat, Kerchache, Stephan, 1988: 550), the Afikpo kept few effigies - unlike the Igbo of the north - and focussed more on the creation of the "mask-costume-dance" ensemble

This type of mask came mainly during the Okumkpa masquerade - a series of satirical parodies and songs and dances - in which hundreds of participants participated (Joubert in R.M.N., 1997: 286).

Estimated age: mid-XXth.
