"Het Impressionisme" - imprint, sketchy method -
First, it can be pointed out that the term 'impression', which is part of the impressionist vocabulary of the immediate experience of the moment, often a random scene from everyday life, without any underlying message or purpose. 
The depiction is no longer an objective recording of reality, but above all the subjective perception of the artist himself which becomes leading with a lot of attention to mood and atmosphere, lighting effects and colour, a sketchy method and working outdoors.

The artist is satisfied or done as soon as the impression is captured. It reinforces the spontaneous and sketchy impression of a work of art, as if it had been put on canvas within minutes with nonchalant brush strokes, not yet completely finished or worked out. 
The smooth brushstrokes (handwriting) and the sometimes seemingly sloppy execution can be seen as metaphors for the fleeting moments as well as the speed of everyday life.

Even in the 21st century, Impressionism still receives a great deal of popularity. Theme exhibitions and the impressionist sections of large museums attract a high number of visitors. In terms of prizes, impressionist top works by e.g. "Claude Monet", "Pierre Auguste Renoir" and "Vincent van Gogh" can compete with "old masters".
