The book called Decameron, known as Prencipe Galeotto (Prince Galehaut), begins, containing a hundred stories in ten days, spoken by seven women and three young men.
Spring 1348, the Black Death reaches Florence and kills thousands of people in a few days. In Santa Maria Novella Church, seven young women and three young men make the decision to wait in the countryside for the plague to end. They head to a secluded castle, where they spend the days telling tasty stories. It is the beginning of a cycle of ten times ten stories, which together form the Decameron. The Decameron is considered one of the absolute masterpieces of world literature, not only because of the virtuoso stories told, but also because of the ingenious framework in which the stories are embedded. The Decameron is also seen as the secular counterpart of the Divina Commedia, if only because of the one hundred stories compared to Dante's one hundred cantos.
