Friedrich Nietzsche, Aldus sprak Zarathustra, Driebergen - De Twee Fonteinen - [Amsterdam, F. Hoes, 1944] - 1st edition , 191 pp, 24.5 × 16.5 cm. Hand-numbered XVI of the 25 Roman-numbered copies, book cover slightly discoloured. Parchment spine with title in gold.

Clandestine, bibliophile edition from the time of the German occupation, dedicated to ‘den Rattenvanger van Berlijn’. The text was hand-set in Lutetia of Jan van Krimpen and printed ‘somewhere in the Netherlands’. Illustrated with a vignette in red and gold on the title page, by Wim van Woerden. The binding (bound half-parchment) was done by Gerard van Laren.

¶ De Jong 595; Simoni N7 : ‘Not what it seems, a translation of Also sprach Zarathustra, but a collection with commentary of unflattering quotations from German authors on Germany, compiled by Lou Lichtveld and published again in 1946 under his pseudonym Albert Helman with the title Teutonenspiegel’.
