Ruth Garrido Vila

An antique architectural fragment carved out of unpolished red "Egyptian" or imperial porphyry in the form of a small column with various, horizontal turned rings visible, created by manual tools which the sculptor used to create this column.  

The term porphyry is from Ancient Greek : "πορφύρα" or porphyra and means "purple". Purple was the color of royalty, and the "imperial porphyry" was a deep purple igneous rock with large crystals of plagioclase. Some authors claimed the rock was the hardest known in antiquity. The emperor Nero had a bad made out of porphyry, which is now in the collection of the Vatican Museum.
