A finely carved Syrian stone sculpture features the naturalistically rendered contour of a quadruped greatly resembling a bull. Much attention has been given to the portrayal of the animal’s features and its muscular physique. Its eyes are recessed to receive shell or semiprecious stone inlays. The animal’s body is perforated,  suggesting that it might either have been embedded with inlays or attached to other material. 

Measurements: 3.6cm length, 1.9cm height

Provenance: From a private London collection, pre 1990.
