Publisher’s green quarter-cloth with paper title label to spine (label printed in green), dappled brown paper-covered boards with colour onlay plus green rules and lettering to upper cover, top edges coloured, 13 tipped-in colour plates (frontispiece mounted on greyish-green art paper, other plates mounted on text paper), 168 pages, 22.4 x 15.2 cm.

This uncommon edition of Dickens’ festive tale features 13 tipped-in colour plates by the British artist Ethel Fanny Everett (fl. 1900-39).   

Little is known of Ethel Everett, save that she trained at the Royal Academy Schools, London, and was a talented portraitist, as well as a book illustrator, exhibiting eight pieces at the Royal Academy between 1911 and 1936. The smoky tones and colour effects of her ‘Christmas Carol’ illustrations are often a little reminiscent of F. Cayley Robinson’s work, in titles such as ‘Genesis’ and ‘The Blue Bird’.  

A review in the 10 December 1910 issue of ‘The Spectator’ notes of the Everett edition: “This is a well-printed and generally attractive reproduction of the ‘Carol’. Miss Ethel F. Everett’s illustrations are effective. Some of the subjects are easy enough; it is by the others, the ghosts, to put it briefly, that an illustrator must be judged, and these are, it seems to us, successful. The ‘white-sheet’ business that satisfied an earlier generation will not do; we must have something more spiritual.”  

Condition:
Contents very clean. Foxing throughout (mostly light; heaviest around plates, and at front and back of book), several pairs of gatherings stretched, one plate with small glue mark (original production flaw), two with corner creases. Endpapers with heavy foxing/offsetting; front free endpaper with slight abrasion to upper corner, front hinge split (but holding well). Edges of page block with foxing, a little soiling and scratching. Binding tight, slightly skewed, with slight lean. Boards and spine with discoloration and marks as shown, a little bumping, rubbing and wear to extremities, scratching to colour onlay, chipping and wear to spine label.
