Constance Rousseau

A rare painted ceiling panel with representation of the Nativity, painted in tempera on a wooden panel.   Mary is depicted reclining on a daybed, while Joseph is seated upon a stool.   In between, is the Christ Child in his crib, which is placed upon a low table.  

I have had this panel in my collection for quite some time. It had been in a Brussels private collection since the late 1960s, and was said to have been purchased at the time from the Brussels antique dealer Madame Servais, known for her Haute Epoque.

Catalonia.  Late Romanesque.  Late 13th - 14th century.  

Dimensions:  L 47.5cm ; W 23.5cm ; 2.7cm thick
