Large Campanian coffin fitting with the mask of a Gorgon with her mouth open in a fang-framed grimace, lolling out tongue, and bare teeth. 
Fine archaic style with almond-shaped eyes and a prominent nose. The hair is arranged in two rows of large curls across the forehead.
Terracotta decorative appliques, often richly painted, denote the deposition of wooden coffins.
Their use would go with the frightening and apotropaic nature of the Gorgon.

Size: H. 6.8 cm, W. 6.7 cm
Material: Terracotta
Culture: Etruscan/Campanian, around 500 BC
Condition: Intact. Fine archaic style. Excellent modeling. Minor surface wear.

Provenance: Ex Swiss private collection of Wladimir Rosenbaum (1894-1984), former owner of Galleria Serodine, Ascona. Thence art market Basel, August 2020 sale.
