Julius Christian Rehder (Flensburg 1861 - 1955 Essen) spent his childhood in Altona near Hamburg. In 1877-80 he went through a lithograph apprenticeship. He went to Berlin in 1881 to work in the profession he trained for. In 1882 in Munich, he decided to become a painter. 1884-89 Akademie Karlsruhe under Ferdinand Keller. 1889-92 Master student of Anton von Werner at the Berlin Akademie. These study trips followed: Northern Germany, Italy, Paris and the USA. Rehder then moved to Hamburg, a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association. 1913-1926 the painter worked in Ettlingen, then again in Hamburg. In 1938, Rehder left Germany and emigrated to Madison, Wisconsin. It was not until 1953 that he returned to Essen at an old age.
The image is titled on the back and has a price tag in Marks, so it must have been created before hyperinflation in 1922. Size without frame: 48 x 60 cm The frame is younger and shows minor age damage.
