A beautiful and rare plate by Joe Colquhoun (‘Charley's War’) for the series ‘PADDY PAYNE’ published in the British magazine LION in the 1960s.

Indian ink and white gouache.

Size: 40 x 40 cm.

Joseph Colquhoun (1926-1987) was a British comic book author.

After serving in the Royal Navy in 1943, he made his debut in Conqueror in 1951. He illustrated ‘Roy of the Rovers’ in 1954, and then ‘Paddy Payne’ (adventures of a fighter pilot during World War II) for Lion magazine from 1957 to 1964. 

His most popular comic strip is ‘Charley's War’ (1979-86), which tells the adventures of a soldier during World War I (published in France as complete collections by DELIRIUM).

Colquhoun retired in 1986, and passed away on April 13th, 1987.
