Japanse geneeskunde uit de Edo-periode – Speciale tentoonstelling “I wa Jinju” 医は仁術 - Heisei periode (1989-heden)
This is the official catalog of the 2014 special exhibition “Ishi wa Jinju” (“Medicine is Benevolence”).
Featuring rare historical materials such as anatomical diagrams by Toyo Yamawaki, the original Kaitai Shinsho translated by Genpaku Sugita, and illustrations of the human body including the internal organs. The catalog also showcases Edo-period medical instruments, doctors’ attire, medicine boxes, electrotherapy devices, as well as models of eyes and ophthalmological tools introduced by Siebold.
The exhibition explores how the concept of Jin—the Confucian virtue of compassion—has guided Japanese medical practice from the Edo period to the present day.
The latter part of the catalog introduces modern medical advancements, including iPS cells and 3D imaging, highlighting the evolution of Japanese medicine.
Highlights include the first public display in 77 years of Genpaku Sugita’s handwritten hanging scroll and the original Zōshi by Toyo Yamawaki.
A must-have for collectors and enthusiasts of medical history, anatomy, and historical medical instruments.
