Description
An exceptional oshe Shango, remarkable both for its construction and decoration: a rare “double pair” of opposing faces (janus) surmounted by the iconic double-axe. Beyond these striking features, the staff is fully embellished with finely engraved geometric patterns, which heighten its refinement and sculptural presence.
Context
Shango (Ṣàngó), orisa of thunder and lightning, embodies a paradox: a benevolent source of fertility and wealth, yet also hot-tempered and potentially destructive. The double-bladed staff (oshe Shango) publicly identifies devotees. In praise dances, worshippers raise the staff high, then drive it down in sweeping gestures to evoke thunder and lightning, or press it to the chest in respect for a deity both kind and volatile. Songs and rituals address this capricious power; the double-axe visualizes Shango’s dual nature and the moral responsibility borne by his followers.
Highlights
- Rare double-janus construction beneath the double-axe finial
- All-over engraved geometric ornament; strong ritual presence
- Early 20th century; stand included
