Currency object 'Mànzhi' — Bana/Fali/Kapsiki/Margi, Nigeria — ijzer — H 50,5 cm - Kapsiki - Nigeria

Currency Object “Mànzhi” — Bana / Fali / Kapsiki / Margi, Nigeria — Iron — H 50.5 cm Origin: Bana / Fali / Kapsiki / Margi peoples, Nigeria Material: Iron, leather Height: 50.5 cm (55 cm with stand) Provenance: French private collection Note: The iron surface was varnished by a previous owner, likely to protect it from oxidation. A fine example of a ceremonial currency axe known as Mànzhi, used among the Bana, Fali, Kapsiki, and Margi peoples of northeastern Nigeria. These prestige objects served not only as symbolic wealth but also as markers of social status and authority. Characteristically, the shaft and blade are forged in one piece, demonstrating remarkable metallurgical expertise. Their clean, sculptural silhouette places these objects at the crossroads of utilitarian form and ritual significance. While examples exist in brass or aluminum, forged iron versions such as this one are considered the most traditional and are documented in Wente-Lukas, Die materielle Kultur der nicht-islamischen Ethnien von Nordkamerun und Nordostnigeria (1977). This piece displays an elegant, vertical composition, heightened by the slight curvature of the blade and the presence of a discreet leather wrap. The iron surface, coated with varnish by a former owner, presents a deep, uniform sheen that highlights the purity of its lines. Mounted on a custom metal stand for display. Highlights - Traditional Mànzhi currency object - Used ceremonially by Bana, Fali, Kapsiki, and Margi peoples - Forged in a single piece — hallmark of high-quality ironwork - Elegant sculptural form - Varnished surface (older restoration to prevent oxidation) - With custom metal stand - From a French private collection
