about the kiln and master
kōbei kiln (est. 1804)
one of japan’s oldest and most respected ceramic workshops, known for its mastery of ruri blue glazes, lusterware, and persian-inspired ceramics.
takuo kato (1917–2005)
designated as an important intangible cultural property holder (living national treasure).
celebrated worldwide for his rediscovery of ancient luster and persian glazing techniques, kato’s influence is evident in the aesthetic and technical perfection of this piece.
although produced at kōbei kiln, this vase bears his supervision and red seal, ensuring authenticity and artistic lineage.
features
ruri glaze (lapis blue)
the surface displays a luminous, transparent deep-blue glaze reminiscent of lapis lazuli. subtle light reflections reveal layers of tone and depth unique to high-fired ruri-yū.
symbolic “hyōtan” (gourd) motif
the gourd has been a japanese symbol of good fortune, longevity, and protection (mubyō-sokusai). its soft, swelling contours express both vitality and harmony, a hallmark of kōbei kiln’s refined modeling.
inscriptions and authenticity
the original paulownia box is inscribed:
“special production for the year 2000”
“ruri-glazed gourd vase (ruriyū hyōtan hananari)”
with the red seal of takuo kato (living national treasure)
the vase base also bears the impressed seal of kōbei kiln.
