It is said to embody an expression that lies between the delicate charm of the Ko-omote mask and the refined dignity and intelligence of the Zō-onna. While older than Ko-omote, the Waka-onna face combines rationality, elegance, and subtle sensuality. The mask closely resembles the Ko-omote, but is categorised as Waka-onna (a variation of Zō-onna). Its hairline is characterised by two thick lines drawn from the forehead to the temples, with three to four finer lines at the temples. On the cheeks, three lines are drawn, one of them being thicker. A distinctive feature of the Waka-onna mask is the slightly upturned corners of the mouth, giving a more composed and graceful expression. In Noh theatre, the Waka-onna mask is often used for roles portraying noble young women, elegant princesses, or refined ladies of the court. It conveys both beauty and inner strength, allowing performers to express a wide range of subtle emotions through refined movements and lighting. The reverse bears the seal of the maker, Zuiun (瑞雲). The wooden storage box is also signed and sealed by the artist on the inside of the lid and comes with a cord and a silk pouch. There are signs of age-related wear and minor blemishes, with discolouration visible on the chin. Please refer to the photos for details of the condition. Dimensions: approx.
