Modeled after the eboshi, a traditional headdress worn by noblemen and samurai since the Heian period, this distinctive helmet is crafted by joining iron plates and coated with rust-colored lacquer. Such helmet designs were often used for unique and elaborate exotic helmets favored by warlords. A famous example is the eboshi-nari kabuto worn by Kato Kiyomasa, one of Japan’s most renowned military commanders. The helmet is adorned with a gold sun crest, symbolizing divine power and enlightenment. The armor set includes a half menpo face mask with a neck guard, a cuirass, tassets to protect the lower body, chainmail arm guards, thigh guards providing flexibility for knee movement, and shin guards. The armor is constructed using traditional techniques, combining metal plates, lacquered leather, and silk cords. A fitting is attached at the back of the cuirass for securing a flagpole. Notably, the back of the cuirass features a metal fitting designed for mounting a flagpole or similar attachments, a practical feature for battlefield identification. This full-size armor comes with a wooden chest for storage and transport, which is designed to be worn on the back. Most of the armor is iron, except for the thigh guards. Some parts of the lacing have been replaced over time, and the shoulder guards are missing. This antique armor shows signs of age-related wear, including scuffs, surface chips, cracks in the lacquer, and damage to the shin guards with visible rust. The thigh guard has missing or loose fasteners. Some parts may be restored or posterior to the armor. The fabric has tears and stains, and the wooden crest has cracks.
