Vintage Japanse souvenir Kokeshi-poppen met landschapsmotieven – Sendai & Gunma (set van 3) - Hout - Japan - Shōwa periode (1926-1989)

Item Description This listing features a group of three Japanese souvenir kokeshi dolls, each reflecting regional identity, materials, and local cultural imagery. The set consists of one larger kokeshi and a pair of smaller birchwood kokeshi, all made as regional souvenirs rather than competition or exhibition works. The largest kokeshi was created by Takahashi Tatsuro, a highly regarded kokeshi artist from Fukushima Prefecture and a recipient of the Prime Minister of Japan Award. This piece was produced as a souvenir for Sendai. It is made of zelkova wood (keyaki), a durable and prestigious material often used in traditional Japanese woodworking. The body is decorated with bamboo and sparrows, a classic and symbolic motif associated with Sendai. This imagery derives from the family crest of the Date clan, the feudal lords who once ruled Sendai, whose emblem was “sparrows among bamboo.” In addition, a verse from the Miyagi folk song “Sansa Shigure” is handwritten on the upper body, further emphasizing the regional character of the piece. The doll is signed by the artist. The medium and small kokeshi form a matching pair made of birch wood. These were produced as souvenirs from the Maru-numa / Suga-numa area in Gunma Prefecture. The medium-sized doll features a painted landscape depicting a pond and a suspension bridge, evoking the natural scenery of the region. The smaller doll shares the same birchwood material and scenic theme, scaled down in size, creating a cohesive souvenir set. These two pieces are unsigned, as is typical for mass-produced regional souvenir kokeshi. All three dolls show light surface wear, small scratches, and natural aging consistent with vintage souvenir items. There are no cracks or structural damage. Overall condition is good, and the set offers a charming snapshot of postwar Japanese regional tourism and folk design. Artist Takahashi Tatsuro A kokeshi artist from Fukushima Prefecture and a recipient of the Prime Minister of Japan Award. Known for refined workmanship and strong regional storytelling, he also produced high-quality souvenir works that retain artistic value.
