【Product details】
This Edo or Meiji period hand-carved wooden sculpture depicts Daikokuten, one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune and a deity associated with wealth, agriculture, and everyday abundance. He is traditionally shown holding a mallet symbolising the granting of fortune and standing upon rice bales, representing sustenance and prosperity rooted in daily life.
The figure is carved in the round and finished with areas of black lacquer. The gold-coloured details were originally applied using lacquer mixed with gold powder, much of which has worn away over time, allowing the underlying black lacquer to show through. This natural wear adds to the depth and character of the surface.
The sculpture is constructed so that the main figure and the base can be separated. The base features layered carving and retains traces of its original surface treatment.
There are clear signs of age and use, including surface wear, dirt, small scratches, cracks and losses to the lacquer, and losses to the wood. The right hand is missing. These details reflect long-term use and age. Please refer to the photos for details.
Dimensions: approx. H 28 cm W 18 cm D 14.5 cm
