Swedish - 1898 - Beker - Art Nouveau - .833 zilver - wijnglas 60g

19th-century Swedish silver presentation goblet, also known as a "pokal" or standing cup in Swedish antique terminology. It's crafted from .833 fineness silver (83.3% pure silver, a standard used in Sweden from the late 1800s into the early 1900s), as indicated by the "833" hallmark. The additional Swedish silver mark likely refers to the national control mark of three crowns in a trefoil shape, which has been mandatory on Swedish silver since 1752 to certify authenticity and origin under state control. The goblet stands on a flared, fluted base with a petal or shell motif around the foot, transitioning to a baluster-shaped stem with a central knob for grip. The bowl flares outward like a small chalice or vase, with ornate hand-engraved floral and scrollwork designs in a style blending Victorian rococo revival and early Art Nouveau influences. The main inscription reads "Minne af Kamrater J.G. Sevelin 18 3/2 98," which translates from Swedish to "Souvenir [or Memory] from Comrades [to] J.G. Sevelin [dated] February 3, 1898." This phrase is a common one on Swedish presentation items from the period, often given as farewell or commemorative gifts in military, professional, or fraternal contexts (e.g., similar inscriptions appear on swords and other silverware as tokens from colleagues or friends). The opposite side features initials "C.A.J. & C.E.J.," likely representing the names or monograms of the givers (possibly something like Carl A. Johansson and Carl E. Johansson, though that's speculative without further records). The piece weighs 60.9 grams, suggesting it's a small, personal item—perhaps used for wine, brandy, or ceremonial toasts, or simply as a decorative memento. Its polished surface shows minor wear consistent with age, but no major damage is visible.
