Beschrijving:

Uitzonderlijke zeventiende-eeuwse olieverfschilderij op doek die de devotionele iconografie van het Ecce Homo uitbeeldt. Door zijn stilistische, lumineuze en formele kenmerken behoort het werk volledig tot de Madrileense School van de hoge Barok.

Het fundamenteel belang van dit doek ligt in zijn compositorische afstamming: het gaat om een intieme en geconcentreerde devotionele versie die rechtstreeks afkomstig is van het beroemde prototype van Juan Carreño de Miranda (1614–1685), in het bijzonder uit zijn compositie "Ecce Homo with Caiaphas" (Subastas Segre, 13 december 2022, lot 63).
Het schilder heeft meesterlijk gekozen voor het borststuk van Christus uit de meester-voorbeeld, waardoor de figuur geïsoleerd wordt om de mystieke lading en de emotionele verbinding met de toeschouwer te versterken.

Op zijn beurt wortelt het Carreño-model waar deze werkstuk van afgeleid is diep in de Spaanse Koningsverzamelingen, geïnspireerd door het pathetische en de kenmerkende buiging van het hoofd van het Ecce Homo van Tiziano, gecombineerd met de teatraliteit van half-lengte composities die door de prenten van de Vlaamse school (cirkel van Antoni van Dyck) wijdverspreid waren.

Het schilderij valt op door een uitgesproken naturalisme in het modelleren van het gezicht van Christus, gekenmerkt door een uitdrukking van diepe, beheerde sereniteit, neergeslagen ogen vol verdriet en subtiel licht opengesperde lippen die een laatste adem weergeven. De met tenebristische invloeden doordrukte belichting projecteert een gerichte lichtval die de anatomie van de hals, de gevlochten doornenkroon en de delicate bloedstralen accentueert, terwijl de figuur zich aftekent tegen een neutrale, donkere achtergrond. Het chroma wordt gedomineerd door aardetinten, bleke carneuze tinten en het heldere rood van de tuniek – een kleur die diep symbolisch is voor de Passie.

Staat van conservering:

In staat van conservering overeenkomstig zijn leeftijd. Het doek toont een subtiele tijds patina die de echtheid bevestigt. Er zijn oude restauratiewerken en een technische herliening aan de achterzijde zichtbaar, wat de perfecte conservering van de schilderlaag waarborgt voor de toekomst.

An extraordinary 17th-century oil on canvas painting depicting the devotional iconography of the Ecce Homo. Due to its stylistic, technical, and formal characteristics, this work belongs entirely to the Madrid School of the High Baroque period.

The fundamental importance of this canvas lies in its compositional lineage: it is an intimate and concentrated version created directly from the celebrated prototype by the court painter Juan Carreño de Miranda (1614–1685), specifically from his composition "Ecce Homo with Caiaphas" (Subastas Segre, 13 de diciembre de 2022, lote 63).

The artist of this painting has masterfully selected the bust of Christ from the master’s prototype, isolating the figure to heighten the mystical emotion and strengthen the psychological connection with the viewer.
In turn, the Carreño model from which this piece derives is deeply rooted in the Spanish Royal Collections, drawing inspiration from the pathos and the characteristic tilt of the head found in Titian’s Ecce Homo, combined with the theatricality of the half-length compositions popularized throughout Europe by Flemish prints (circle of Anthony van Dyck).

The painting is remarkable for the profound naturalism in the modeling of Christ's face, characterized by an expression of deep, restrained serenity, downcast eyes heavy with sorrow, and subtly parted lips capturing a final breath. The tenebrist-influenced lighting casts a focused glow that highlights the anatomy of the neck, the woven crown of thorns, and the delicate streams of blood, contrasting the figure against a dark, neutral background. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, pale flesh tints, and the vivid red of the tunic—a color deeply symbolic of the Passion.

Condition:
In good condition relative to its age. The canvas displays a subtle historic patina that certifies its authenticity. Older professional restoration work and a structural lining (reentelado) are visible on the reverse, ensuring the long-term preservation of the paint layer.
