'Babylonië of het Babylonische Rijk was een koninkrijk in Mesopotamië van 1800 v.Chr. tot 539 v.Chr. Daarnaast wordt de term ook wel geografisch gebruikt om zuidelijk Mesopotamië aan te duiden, waarbij het noordelijk deel dan veelal als Assyrië wordt aangeduid. Het zuidelijk deel van Babylonië wordt op zijn beurt soms aangeduid als Soemer en later als Chaldea.'
