Beschrijving van de verkoper
Elegant antique French theatre binoculars, also known as opera glasses, dating from approximately 1880–1910.
The binoculars are richly decorated with broad, curved panels of genuine mother of pearl. The material displays an attractive natural iridescence with soft pink, green and silver tones. The body and frame are made of gilt brass, complemented by mother-of-pearl eyepieces and a matching ribbed focusing wheel.
The bridge is finely engraved with the inscription “12 Verres”, referring to the multi-lens optical construction. This is an optical specification rather than a maker’s name.
The focusing mechanism operates correctly and the binoculars have been fully tested. The optical lenses are present and functional. The mother-of-pearl panels are complete and very well preserved, without missing sections or major damage.
A decorative and functional example of late 19th-century French theatre culture, suitable for collectors of antique optical instruments, opera memorabilia and mother-of-pearl objects.
